Glynn’s Memorial Carp match – 2/3 September 2024
On 2nd September, our 24-hour carp match was dedicated to the memory of our great friend, Glynn Swain. It was an amazing weekend with a full complement of 16 anglers and maybe 65 in total including Glynn’s friends and family present for the BBQ. A massive thank you to everyone who donated over £500 towards a memorial bench. It was also agreed to name a 17lb 8oz Mirror in Bellwood after him, (see picture with Alan Hudson below). We decided on “Gollum” – Glynns nickname around the lakes. For those who didn’t know Glynn we was a proper gent, always first to help out with work parties and always on the fishery. Many will miss him.

Result of the silver fish only match on Marshalls (previously Willows). 1st September 2024. Only 8 anglers fished the Silvers fish only match on Marshalls, but the fishing was good with the inevitable Carp caught and lost on light gear!! Result Richard Wiggins 18-3-0. Alan Symes 11-4-0, Tim Wirth 10-4-0, Steve Myers 8-15-0, Henry Sadler 7-14-0, Dave Smith 7-2-0, Richard Faithfull 6-12-0 and Ken Haines who was looking for the Bream had 10ozs.
Result of the Silver Fish only match on Dobsons. 28th August 2024. The result was Ken Haines 6-8-8, Richard Faithfull 3-2-0, Henry Sadler 1-13-0, Dave Smith 1-3-0, Brian Pallett 0-12-0, Tony Mortlock 0-9-0, Steve Thame 0-6-0. Ken Rolfe DNW. As you can see the fish did not play ball. Everyone was convinced they had fish in front of them but they did not feed. Ken had 2 small Bream early on and Richard had a Tench, other than that it was small fish.
Annual NAA v Shipston AA match. Enborne. 13th July 2024. We had 18 swims cut out on Enborne Canal, which was OK because there were 16 of us fishing. Shipston AA brought nine anglers and we had seven so we stole one of their anglers (who weighed in 1 ounce!) The results were, James Yates (S) 7-14-0, Steve Pallett 5-4-0, Brian Pallett 4-13-0, Dave Smith 4-9-0, Les Ashby (S) 2-7-0, Phil Outram (S) 2-4-0, Pete Morgan (S) 2-1-0. The others each had one and a half pounds or less. Young James (pictured below with two NAA fogies!) was the youngest member fishing and had a PB Tench of 2-9-0. The other weights were made up of big Perch , Bream, skimmers and small Tench. Good fun on the day although with the boat traffic and early weed in the Canal some pegs were hard to fish. The team result was Shipston 17-15-0, and Newbury 16-6-0, which goes to show we borrowed the wrong man!!!
Result of the Annual Charity match 6th October 2024
A good day in aid of the British Legion. Ade Tarrant was on peg 17 and won the match with an impressive. 18-2-0. Ade had three perch over 2lbs and lost count of the other Perch up to 2lbs. He had a kilo of worm with him and run out with an hour to go!! It is fair to say that he attacked it! Second, and you couldn’t write this, his brother Matt Tarrant came second on favoured peg 24 catching big bream, skimmers and roach all day for an impressive 15-8-0.
In an admirable piece of sibling unity, Ade has asked that the H4H trophy – which Matt initially paid for – is engraved with both their names as it was quite special.
The top four was made up with Brian Cripps 10-0-0 on peg 18 and Dave Clarke with 8-0-0 on peg 12. The other section winners were Gary Didcock from Shipston with 3-2-0 from peg 3 and Stuart Fleming from Shipston on the 3rd pallet in dog shit alley with 5-4-0.
Match secretary Dave Smith drew peg 25 which is the 2nd one over the little bridge at the top end. A nice peg, not quite under the road bridge, he scratched a modest 2-6-0, amazed that he didn’t have a single bream despite being a mere 12 yards from Ade’s winning bag.
