Over 70’s League – Match Reports and Table 2024/25

Result of the Last ever Rover Over 70’s match on Knotts on 16th October.

As not many of the other Over 70’s enjoy the Rover element, we have decided that from next season they will be pegged.  R Speirs 13-0-0, H Sadler 3-9-8, T Mortlock 3-3-0, S Myers 0-15-8, A Megarry 0-8-8, D Smith 0-2-0. Roy Speirs had one bite, one carp. This was enough to win this season’s league, pipping Steve Myers who otherwise would have won with his two roach. Congratulations Roy!   A hard day and certainly not the type of match that we expected.

Result of the Over 70’s match on Dobsons on 18th September

D Smith 30-13-0, S Myers 26-4-0, R Speirs 17-3-0, M Burrows 7-14-0, H Sadler 0-5-0.   R Wiggins, B Pallett and T Mortlock DNW.   Dave Smith caught 11 Bream from peg 7.   He fished just off the island with a cage feeder with fishmeal groundbait and 3 or 4 maggots on a size 16 hook. He had liners all day so knew the fish were there in numbers. Steve Myers was on peg 5 and had 3 nice carp and a Bream, Roy Speirs had 3 carp and Merv Burrows had 1 carp and some Roach and Perch.

Result of the Over 70’s rover on Alders on 21 Aug.

S Myers 22-11-0, D Smith 10-9-0, K Rolfe 3-1-0, S Pallett 3-0-0, B Pallett 1-8-0, R Wiggins 1-3-0, T Mortlock 0-15-0, H Sadler 0-11-0, A McGarry 0-11-0, K Hallis, R Speirs and M Burrows DNW.   Another Bream or bust day on Alders. Steve Myers found them from peg 23 and Dave Smith had 3 in 45 mins on peg 17 (he could have had an extra 4 hrs in bed!!).   Ken Rolfe had 2 bites and landed one Bream to beat Steve pallet by an ounce!

Result of the Over 70’s match at Bellwood on 31st July.

Eleven NAA Old Boys turned out for the ‘Waiting for God’ (Over 70s) match.
Weather ‘Scorchio’, fished hard, the Carp had a day off. Winning catch consisted of two Bream, the rest had a mix of Roach, Perch and the odd Skimmer Bream.
There were three DNW.
1st   Roy Speirs        11lb 4oz
2nd  Steve Thame     7lb  4oz
3rd   Steve Pallett      6lb  6oz   ( who beat his brother Brian, on the next peg, who had 6lb 4oz) 5th Keith Hallis, 6th Tony Mortlock, 7th Richard Wiggins 8th  Alf Megarry
DNW Steve Myers, Ken Rolfe Tim Wirth
The pre-match banter, as always, was first class ( you don’t fish NAA matches if you’re thin skinned !!)
Oh! and Keith Hallis fell in and had to be dragged out!! Him, walking about in his underpants whilst his cloths dried out , was not a pretty sight.
Note; Many thanks to the Fishery Manager and his team for sorting out Bellwood , it’s looking great.
The pic, Wiggy (Richard Wiggins) and Brian Pallet enjoying a bit of shade prior to the start of the match.

Result of the Over 70’s match on Marshalls lake on 3 Jul 24.   1st Tim Wirth 26-14-0, 2nd Ken Rolfe 26-10-0, 3rd Steve Myers 22-1-0, 4th Roy Speirs 19-2-0, 5th Merv Burrows 17-8-0, 6th Dave Smith 11-4-0, 7th Alf McGarry 6-10-0, 8th Henry Sadler 1-8-0, 9th Steve Thame 1-3-0, 10th Tony Mortlock 0-8-0.   Richard Wiggins and Brian Pallett DNW. The lake looked in good condition, we had a cloudy sky and there was a little colour in the water, what could possibly go wrong!   Carp and Tench were needed to record a decent match weight.   Tim had 3 Carp and a few Roach whereas Ken had 4 Carp. All of the other big weights were Carp except Merv who had 3 Tench and a Bream. The Carp were mostly in the 8 – 12lb category and looked in very nice condition. Steve Myers had one of 14lb.  With Bellwood still closed it is now onto Enborne Canal at the end of the month.
