Hambridge - K&A Canal

Brief description of fishery:

To the east of Newbury the club has a long stretch of canal and waterway either side of Hambridge Road bridge. From here, there is a short, straight section headed west to Ham Lock, fishing on the south bank tow path. The fishing also includes the backstream which flows beside the canal. Moving east, the fishery runs from Hambridge Road to Bulls Lock, fishing on the north bank, then to the south bank opposite the power cables, and back to the north bank east of the swing bridge. Read the map carefully when using this section. Waterways – Hambridge Canal At Bulls Lock, there is a short gap to below the railway bridge where fishing on the flowing stretch downstream to Widmead Lock. Here the water is deeper with more flow, having picked up current from the incoming River Kennet at Bulls Lock. This stretch has long straight sections for trotting with many fish holding features such as overhanging bushes and stream run-offs. This length contains most species owing to the mix of still and flowing water. Pole, stick float and waggler fishing on light tackle are popular as well as lure fishing, particularly in the lock areas and margins.
