Over 60’s League – Match Reports & Table 2024/25

Result of the Over 60’s match on Marshalls on 2nd October 2024.   D Clark 89-0-0, S Myers 40-10-0, A Symes 28-0-0, D Smith 24-4-0, M Burrows 6-8-0, B Pallet 4-12-0, H Sadler 4-12-0, M Chaple 3-8-0, T Mortlock 2-8-0, R Wiggins, K Rolfe and A Megarry DNW.   Carp and Tench were dominant if you could get them to feed.   Dave Clark caught mainly on Wafters, Steve Myers caught some on bread and Dave Smith caught 3 carp in the last 90 mins on maggot.     A good turnout on a nice dry Autumn day proving that the older members prefer the lakes to the Canals.

Result of the Over 60’s match on Enborne Canal on 11th September 24.   A poor turnout on one of our best stretches of canal. We had to fish Enborne Down because the top stretch above Guyers Lock has not been maintained by the club which is a shame because it is the most popular stretch of canal. Some anglers were put of by the canal boats but in reality we only had 3 all day. Nevertheless there were plenty of fish to be had with Henry Sadler catching Roach, Perch and Tench from the first pallet. Henry Sadler 7-7-0, William Bowsher 4-1-0, Malcolm Chapple 3-15-0, Dave Smith 3-3-0, Alf Megarry 0-4-0.

Result of the Over 60’s match at Avington on 28th August 2024 Only 6 made it to Avington – perhaps they know its not a carp puddle!!  Malcolm Burrows 5-1-0, Henry Sadler 4-8-0, Dave Smith 2-14-0, Malcolm Chapple, 2-10-0, Steve Thame 1-2-0, Alf Megarry 0-6-0.

Result of the Over 60’s match at Marshalls on 14th August. Fourteen NAA Vets turned out. The banter as usual was excellent, focussed mainly on Keith Hallis who had fell in on the last Over 70’s match.

– “There’s a new rule Keith, No Swimming.”
– “There’s water wings in the shed for you Keith.”
– “I’m not giving that ugly bugger the kiss of life.”

The lake fished reasonably well for a change (it normally switches off on match days), with some carp showing and decent bags (14lb +) of roach and small skimmers. Strangely, no big bream. Oh! and the weather wasn’t very kind. As soon as the draw had finished it rained, and it rained, a pause, and it rained again. There was a strong rumour that all the fauna that lived in and around the lake, were all lined up in pairs at the gate, waiting for some bloke called Noah!!

Match winner – Allan Symes , Peg 44, 45lb 12oz
2nd  –  Steve Myers, Peg 40, 38lb
3rd   –  Dave Clarke,  Peg 30, 35lb

Result of the Over 60’s match at  Dobsons on 24th July.   Richard Wiggins 4-9-0, Tony Mortlock 3-8-0, Malcolm Chapple 2-14-0, Steve Myers 2-6-0, Henry Sadler 0-8-0, Brian Pallett 0-5-0,  Steve Pallett 0-2-0, Ken Haines 0-0-8.   Ken Rolfe, Mervin Burrows and Alf Megarry DNW

Result of the Over 60’s match at Enborne on 17th July. Mervyn Burrows 18-2-0, Dave Smith 8-0-0, Brian Pallett 2-7-0, Henry Sadler 2-6-0, Alf McGarry 0-12-0.   It seems the change from Bellwood to the Canal did not suit everyone!!  Merv had 3 very large Bream and some Perch and bits, Dave had 3 large Perch and some bits, Brian beat Henry by an ounce. Merv drew peg 16 which is where young James had his winning weight on Saturday’s match v Shipston AA.

Result of the Over 60’s match on Alders on 26 Jun.   Dave Smith 23-6-0, Ken Haynes 5-10-0, Richard Wiggins 5-2-0, Tim Wirth 3-3-0.   Henry Sadler, Ken Rolfe, Mervyn Burrows Alan Goodlad, Alf Megarry, Keith Hallis and Tony Mortlock DNW.   Ken and Wiggy had 1 Bream, Tim had a Tench. Dave Smith on the other hand caught 7 Bream and 3 Perch!   Why he caught fish and others not is a mystery. Reigning league champion Dave insisted he was doing nothing different to the others (although you’d think he was!!). Henry came round and watched him bait up, cast and catch a Bream and he, who knows a bit about fishing, went and did the same and never had a bite!!  Good to see three new contestants – though not a good start for them!
