We run two leagues, Over 60’s and Over 70’s. These are held in a very friendly and lightly competitive nature with great banter. New participants are always welcomed.
A traditional Club Championship for all ages was sadly abandoned in 2022 due to a lack of interest from younger age groups.
Four 24-hour carp matches are held in summer, and four pike matches in winter.

In October we hold a popular Charity match, and early December brings our Christmas match. Here participants can choose whether to fish Bellwood lake, the nearby canal or the adjacent stretch of the Kennet normally accessible only by ticket exchange at Thatcham Angling.

COMPETITION RULES
1. Competitions open to NAA members only unless stated in the permit.
2. Competitions to be of 5 hours duration unless otherwise stated on the permit.
3. The match will be pegged down unless stated on the permit. Start, draw and finish times will be as stated on the permit and matches started by an agreed signal.
4. Each competitor on drawing their peg number shall proceed to the corresponding number on the bank and this will be considered their fishing ground where they will fish. The peg must remain in position until the weigh-in is completed.
5. Every competitor must fish from within one metre either side of their designated peg. On flowing water, the competitor may fish in the direction of the flow as far as the next peg. On still water, they may fish as far as half the distance between their peg and the pegs on either side. Where competitors are drawn on opposite banks, the limit of the swim is the line midway between each bank. On Rover matches competitors are allowed to move from their swim provided their catch is returned safely to the water before moving.
The competitor will restrict their activities completely to these boundaries, neither their person, their tackle, their hook baits or ground baits may intrude into their neighbours swim.
In an extreme situation e.g. snagged tackle of a snagged fish, an angler must seek permission from their neighbour/s before moving from their designated peg to try and remedy the situation.
6. No competitor may move their peg or exchange their peg or draw card with another without the organiser’s official consent.
7. Competitors must retain all fish in keepnets which comply with the relevant EA Byelaws. Competitors must take every practicable step to keep their fish alive and, after weighing them, must ensure their careful return to the water. If, for any reason fish are seen to be in distress, a competitor or match official has the right to demand that they be weighed immediately and returned to the water during the course of the match.
8. Two separate keepnets must be used for carp and silver fish, or in any circumstance where the number or type of fish may be damaged if retained or transferred for weighing from one net only.
9. A competitor shall have in use one rod or pole, one line and one single hook at one time, but may have other rods or poles and tackle assembled for use in position behind him/her, if possible, providing that no such other tackles are baited.
10. Any bait, subject to local rules, can be used except live or dead fish, frogs, spinning baits, floating baits, artificial baits or artificial lures.
11. Before the starting signal no competitor must on any account ground bait or loose feed the swim but will be allowed to wet a line, plumb the depth and test the float, mix and wet ground bait, clear their ground of weed or obstructions and position their equipment. On no account must a loaded feeder be used before the starting signal. A ledger weight or empty feeder may be cast to find depth and distance etc., but at no time must the line be left in the water whilst continuing to set up other tackle.
12. All groundbait may be thrown in by hand, or by use of one or two handed catapults, throwing sticks, swim feeders, bait droppers and bait cups, but no other mechanical means of projecting groundbait is permitted. Competitors are not allowed to feed with a pole cup when another rod and line is in the water.
13. Competitors must strike, play and land their own fish except in the case of junior matches or physical disability.
14. A competitor may wade provided that the water does not extend above the knees unless they can touch the bank with fingertips, in which case the water can extend above the knees. When platforms are used, the water must not come over the knees when standing on a river / lake bed.
15. A competitor must cease fishing at the finishing signal. Should they still be playing a fish hooked before the signal is given, they will be permitted no more than fifteen minutes after time has been called to land the fish.
16. All fish caught are eligible for weighing with the exception of pike, game fish and crustaceans.
17. Weighing must be carried out by the designated scales person and no competitor should weigh his own catch without an independent witness.
18. Competitors are responsible for ensuring that their pegs are clear of litter and no competitor may have their catch weighed in who has litter lying on the banks of their swim.
19. Any objection to an angler’s conduct, for whatever reason, must be lodged with a match official or weigher within one hour of the end of the match. Any such matter that cannot be resolved at the time will be dealt with under the disciplinary procedure.
20. All the foregoing rules are subject to the byelaws of the Environment Agency, and any local rules applicable to a fishery.
Addition Rules for Pike Matches
1 Anglers may fish with one rod only unless it is agree that 2 rods may be used for a particular match or series of matches, Any number of rods and tackle may be assembled on the bank ready for use. Only one bait can be presented with each rod employed in the match. The practice of offering two or more baits or lures on a single set-up is strictly forbidden.
2 Able-bodied anglers must strike, play and land their own fish. Junior and less-abled anglers must strike and play their own fish but assistance with landing and unhooking is allowed – common sense must prevail in all cases. All runs should be dealt with as promptly as possible in an effort to avoid deep hooking. All competitors may obtain assistance from stewards or neighbouring competitors to unhook fish and anyone experiencing difficulty should immediately try to summon assistance to ensure the welfare of any fish landed.
3 All Anglers should be in possession of the appropriate unhooking tools. This should include, as a bare minimum, forceps and an unhooking mat.
4 LIVEBAITING IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED. Anyone caught with live baits in the vicinity of their peg, even if eventually intended as dead-baits, will be disqualified. Anglers may fish only with dead-baits or any legal kind of artificial lure.
5 An angler who is playing a fish when the final signal is given will be allowed a reasonable time to land his catch. No fish hooked after the final signal will count.
6 Matches will be fished on a rover basis.
CUPS AND TROPHIES TO BE COMPETED FOR EACH SEASON
The following cups and Trophies are available and may be included in the Match Programme.
Champion Shield
This is awarded to the angler gaining the highest number of points during the season at Club Championship matches (C/C) fished on Association waters. The angler with the top weight on each match will be awarded 15 points, the second 14 points and so on. In the event of a tie the angler with the highest number of match wins over select number of matches wins. If there is still a tie the highest total weight will be taken into account. Similar shields/cups are awarded to the Ladies Champion, Junior Ladies Champion and Junior Champions.
Club Specimen Cup
This is awarded to the angler catching the largest fish (excluding trout) of any species on Association waters (as deemed by the Committee to be a specimen fish for Association waters).
Graham Swait Cup
This is similarly awarded to a Junior Member. Vicky Prater Pike Trophy
This is awarded to the angler catching the largest individual pike during the season on Association waters.
Alan Betts Carp Trophy
This is awarded to the angler catching the largest individual carp during the season on Association waters.
Newbury Weekly News Bream Trophy
This is awarded to the angler catching the largest individual bream during the season on Association waters.
Rover Trophy: Twilight Trophy: Night Trophy
These will be fished as three separate series with points allocated as for the Champion Shield.
The angler with the highest number of points in each series will be awarded the respective trophy.
Buckingham Pike Cup
This is awarded to the angler gaining the highest number of points at selected pike matches on Association waters.
Ben Smith Pike Trophy
This is awarded to the angler weighing in the largest individual pike at selected matches on Association waters.

Each trophy is awarded to the angler weighing in the highest individual aggregate of fish (excluding trout and pike) at a selected match on Association waters.

This is awarded to the winner of a selected ladies match fished on Association waters.

Over 70s Trophy
This is awarded to the angler gaining the highest number of points at selected matches on Association waters (excluding trout and pike). Any angler over the age of 70 years is eligible.
Reg Ashton Barbel Trophy
This is awarded to the angler weighing in the largest individual barbel in any club competition on Association waters.
Reg Davies Perch Trophy
This is awarded to the angler weighing in the largest individual perch in any club competition on Association waters.
Bernard Pallett Roach Cup
This is awarded to the angler weighing in the largest individual roach in any club competition on Association waters.
Norman Unwin – Crownmead Shield
This is awarded to the winner of a selected match fished on Association waters.
Dick Taylor Trophy
This is awarded to the winner of the Christmas match fished on Association waters.
New Years Day Shield
This is awarded to the winner of the New Years Day competition fished on Association waters.
Inter Schools Trophy
This is awarded to the winning school team at the Inter Schools match.
Committee Trophy
This is awarded to the Committee Member gaining the highest number of points at selected matches (excluding trout and pike).
Summer and Winter Pairs
Engraved silver salvers are awarded to the winning pairs at selected matches fished on Association waters. Any mix and match of pairs of anglers are permitted.
Ladies Rosebowl
This is awarded to the winner of the Ladies Christmas Match.
Junior Christmas Match Trophy
This is awarded to the winner of the Junior Christmas Match.
Most Improved Angler Trophy
This is awarded to the most improved Junior of the year. Over 80s Trophy
This is awarded to the angler gaining the highest number of points at selected matches.
Barrie Page Chub Trophy
This is awarded to the angler weighing in the largest individual Chub in any Club competition on Association waters
