Newbury Angling Association – Fish Mouth Damage and Fish Welfare Guidance

The welfare of our fish stocks is a priority for the Association. Recent observations have highlighted concerns about mouth damage to carp, and new regulations are being introduced to protect the health of our fish.

From the 1st December 2025, the following regulations will apply across all NAA venues:

  1. Hooks
  •  Barbless hooks only are permitted with the exception of the Rivers and Canals which will allow barbed hooks up to a size 12.
  • Predator fishing will allow semi-barbless hooks only.
  •  Hook sizes larger than size 4 are not allowed for carp fishing.

360 rigs (not to be confused with the Spinner/Ronnie rig) and rigs are known to cause tearing and are prohibited.

  1. Fishing Methods
  •  Zig fishing is banned across all Association waters.
  •  Surface fishing is permitted only with suitable tackle (size 12-8 hooks recommended) and must not be used in conditions where fish welfare is at risk (e.g., extreme heat).
  1. Fish Care
  •  All anglers must use an adequate unhooking mat or cradle.
  • • Carp care kits (e.g. propolis for hook wounds) must be carried and used when required.
  • Fish must be handled with care (unhook the fish in the landing net if safely achievable), keep fish out of the water for the minimum time possible and returned them safely.
  1. Monitoring
  • Bailiffs will monitor fish condition and catches.
  • Repeat offenders who disregard welfare rules risk disciplinary action.

Your cooperation is essential in protecting the health of our fish stocks and ensuring the future of our waters.
